NEW YORK (CNN) -- Pfizer Inc. said Monday that it is filing a new drug application with the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market a generic version of the blockbuster drug Viagra.
"Pfizer is pleased to report that the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Viagra," the company said in a statement.
The drug, which is sold under the brand name Sildenafil, is one of a growing number of drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). Erectile dysfunction is a condition in which a man cannot get or keep an erection.
Viagra, Pfizer's first generic drug launched last year, is available by prescription only and works by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping to achieve and maintain an erection.
Pfizer said the approval of Viagra will be effective for up to 36 hours, with the drug's effect lasting up to 36 hours.
The company said it will add information on the drug's potential uses and regulatory status to the existing Viagra application.

In November, the FDA approved a generic version of Viagra called Revatio, which works by increasing blood flow to the penis.
The drug was developed by Bayer Corp. and is known under the brand name Revatio.
Pfizer said it is "notifying patients and caregivers that the drug is no longer available."
Last week, the company said it is working to develop a new marketing strategy to promote the drug through Web sites, including those for online and print retailers.
"We're very pleased to support Pfizer in its efforts to bring Viagra to market," said Sidney Taurel, Pfizer's chairman and chief executive.
Pfizer said the drug is not expected to be available by prescription for U. consumers, as it is not approved for use by women.
